On 8 September 2010 in Brussels Representative of Ukraine to the European Union H.E. Mr.Kostiantyn Yelisieiev presented letters of credence to the President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy.
During the meeting, the European Council President emphasized his readiness to foster gradual approximation of Ukraine to the EU and to contribute to resolve pressing issues in Ukraine-EU bilateral relations in the context of preparations to the EU-Ukraine Summit in Brussels.
Special attention was paid to further visa liberalization for the citizens of Ukraine and to acceleration of the negotiations on Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU.
K.Yelisieiev briefed H.Van Rompuy on current political and economic processes in Ukraine and reiterated that the European integration remains the top priority of the national development of Ukraine.
The European Council President stressed that he was looking forward to the next meeting with President of Ukraine V.Yanukovych, expected to take place in the nearest future in Brussels.
Ex-Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Belgium Herman Van Rompuy is the first President of the EU Council, a post created in accordance to the Lisbon Treaty in force since 01 December 2009. With entrance of the Lisbon Treaty into force, newly appointed heads of foreign diplomatic missions to the European Union present their credential letters both to the President of the European Commission and to the President of the EU Council.
