Minister Reynders congratulates Ukraine on the occasion of the 23rd anniversary of its independence. For Minister Reynders a free Ukraine, democratic and independent press is an essential element in the stability of the Euro-Atlantic area. Belgium fully supports the efforts in this regard from the international community and the European Union in particular. The Minister hoped that with the goodwill of all, meeting this week in Minsk as a first step towards a constructive dialogue that will stop the uncontrollable escalation of violence and the suffering of the population.
Minister Reynders condemned the multiple threats and violations of the territorial integrity of Ukraine by the Russian Federation. Deployments of force at the border transit of mercenaries and supplying arms to secessionist groups are unacceptable behaviors that fuel conflict and diminish the possibility of a diplomatic resolution. For the Minister respecting the territorial integrity of Ukraine and the end of external interference are the conditions for a future peace agreement. Ukraine should decide only in the context of free and democratic structures, its future and its relations with neighboring countries.
