Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Didier Reynders condemns the recognition of the Crimea as an independent state by Russia and the signing by President Putin of a draft treaty to annex the territory. He deplores these decisions despite repeated calls from the European Union not to deepen the crisis in Ukraine and to keep intact dialogue between all parties involved.
Belgium recognizes the right to self-determination but the referendum of 16 March was not the result of preparatory negotiations, it was held under pressure and in haste and without the consent of the Government of Ukraine. That is why this referendum in the Crimea was unanimously declared unconstitutional and illegal by the international community.
The Minister therefore believes that it is a clear violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine by the Russian Federation.
Didier Reynders appeal to reason and is convinced that our goal must remain a political and negotiated solution between all parties concerned and full respect for Ukrainian sovereignty and international law.
