Ukrainian Diplomats from the Embassy of Ukraine in the Kingdom of Belgium, Mission of Ukraine to the EU, Mission of Ukraine to NATO, ambassadors and diplomats from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Moldova, representatives of the Ukrainian community in Belgium took part in a ceremony commemorating Soviet and Belgian heroes, who died for the liberation of Belgium from the Nazi invaders and buried in Brussels’ cemetery.
Ukraine made a significant contribution to the victory over Nazism. There were many Ukrainians on the side of the united forces: in the armies of the United Kingdom and Canada (45 thousand), Poland (120 thousand), the USSR (more than 6 million), the United States (80 thousand) and France (6 thousand), as well as the liberation movement in Ukraine (100 thousand in the UPA). Total – 7 million Ukrainians. More than 2,5 million Ukrainians were awarded Soviet and Western medals and orders, more than 2 thousand became Heroes of the Soviet Union, 32 of them twice, and the best aviator Ivan Kozhedub has been honored three times.
