On January 12, 2015, while on a working visit to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, Ukrainian Ambassador to Belgium and Luxembourg Ihor Dolhov had an array of meetings with the country’s parliamentary representatives and government officials, European Investment Bank management and the activists of the local Ukrainian community.
Ambassador Dolhov met with Anne Brasseur, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. Unfolding situation in east Ukraine in the wake of the continued Russia’s military aggression, absence of any practical steps on the part of the Russian Federation to de-escalate the increasingly aggravating situation in Ukraine’s eastern regions, continued Crimea occupation, further violations of human rights by occupation authorities in Crimea, continued illegal detention (on false charges and for political reasons) of Ukrainian citizens on the territory of the Russian Federation – including Nadia Savchenko (member of the Standing Delegation of Ukraine’s Parliament to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe), Oleg Sentsov and many others were among the main highlights of the meeting. Ambassador Dolhov expressed hope for further support of Ukraine’s stance by the Council of Europe and the leadership of this powerful international organization during the upcoming Assembly’s Winter session 2015. Anne Brasseur reiterated her firm stance with regard to strong condemnation of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine in violation of international law rules in general and the Statute of the organization in particular. Assembly’s President assured Ukraine’s Ambassador of Assembly’s strong commitment to further efforts towards peaceful resolution of the situation. According to Anne Brasseur, all those issues will be focused during yet another visit of the Presidential Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe to Ukraine on 15-16 January 2015.
Ukraine’s Ambassador met with Marc Angel, Chairperson of the Committee for Foreign Affairs of the Luxembourg Parliament, who revealed that the country’s Parliament had received the text of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement and would soon be considered by the Committee.
The focus of Ambassador’s meeting with Jean Olinger, Political Director of the Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs of Luxembourg, was on the issues relating to the security situation in Ukraine, Ukraine’s renunciation of the non-aligned policy, Ukraine’s internal policy, prospects for Ukraine’s EU integration, bilateral cooperation within NATO. Jean Olinger assured of full support by Luxembourg for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and independence.
An in-depth discussion of the pace of economic reforms implemented in Ukraine, further ways to take forward Ukraine’s cooperation with European Investment Bank was held during Ambassador’s meeting with the management of the Bank. This influential financial institution intends to considerably increase the loan portfolio for Ukraine as well as launch a new project in the field of education.
Ukraine’s Ambassador held a meeting with the activists of the local Ukrainian community whose substantial contribution to collecting and forwarding humanitarian aid to Ukraine was highly appreciated by Mr. Dolhov. The total volume of the said aid exceeded 20 tons. Ways to increase cooperation between Ukrainian civil society organizations and Ukrainian Embassy to Belgium and Luxembourg were discussed.
